(1) Based on the production characteristics of spiral welded pipes, the internal weld typically employs a lower welding current, whereas the external weld uses a higher welding current. However, under conditions of higher welding current, the stirring effect in the molten pool is intensified, and the amount of wire melted correspondingly increases, resulting in increased weld reinforcement, degraded weld appearance, and poorer edge transition.
(2) Welding voltage: Because the welding arc has a conical shape, the magnitude of the welding voltage directly affects the arc length. Consequently, as the welding voltage increases, the arc length grows, the range of movement of the arc spot expands, and the weld pool widens, resulting in a broader weld bead profile. When welding in the horizontal position, this only alters the weld width without affecting the edge transition. However, for spiral‑welded pipes, the external weld is performed on an inclined plane; under gravity, the molten weld metal tends to flow laterally. Therefore, the higher the welding voltage, the wider the weld pool, the more pronounced the lateral flow of the weld metal, and ultimately, the greater the tendency for the weld metal to deviate from its intended path.
