1. Cleaning

Solvents and emulsions are used to clean steel surfaces, removing oil, grease, dust, lubricants, and similar organic contaminants; however, they cannot eliminate rust, scale, or flux residues from the steel surface. Therefore, in corrosion‑prevention processes, they serve only as auxiliary measures.

2. Tool Rust Removal

The steel surface is primarily cleaned using wire brushes and similar tools, which can remove loose or flaking scale, rust, weld spatter, and other contaminants. Manual tool cleaning can achieve a Sa2 grade, while power‑tool cleaning can reach Sa3. However, when the steel surface is covered with solid iron oxide, tool‑based cleaning may be ineffective and fail to attain the required anchor profile depth for corrosion‑protection applications.

3. Pickling

Acid pickling is typically carried out using chemical or electrolytic methods. Chemical pickling is used solely for pipeline corrosion protection, effectively removing scale, rust, and old coatings; it may also serve as a post‑treatment step following sandblasting to remove rust. Although chemical cleaning can achieve a certain level of surface cleanliness and roughness, the resulting anchor profile is relatively shallow, making the surface prone to contamination.
