After production, the cross-section of spiral welded steel pipe should be close to circular. The ovality tolerance requires that the major outer diameter not exceed the nominal outer diameter by more than 1%, and the minor outer diameter not fall below the nominal outer diameter by more than 1%. If the pipe ends are elliptical, they will not align properly during field butt welding. So, what types of spiral welded steel pipes are prone to developing ovality?

Spiral steel pipe After production, the cross-section should be close to circular. The ovality tolerance requires that the major outer diameter not exceed the nominal outer diameter by more than 1%, and the minor outer diameter not fall below the nominal outer diameter by more than 1%. When the ends of a spiral welded pipe are elliptical, they cannot be properly butted together during on-site welding. So, what types of spiral welded pipes are prone to developing ovality?

After weld repair of seam defects at the ends of spiral steel pipes, ovality is prone to occur. Similarly, spiral steel pipes with butt‑jointed plates are also susceptible to ovality. Whenever the pipe ends have been repaired by welding, or when there are extensive welded areas along the pipe body, or when butt‑jointed plates are present, it is essential to carefully measure the ovality of the spiral steel pipe. If the measured ovality exceeds the allowable tolerance, rework must be performed.

Elliptical defects in spiral welded pipes are typically repaired using a jack. The area with the smallest diameter is identified, and the jack is used to apply pressure to that section for one to five hours. After removing the jack, the ovality is re-measured to determine whether it meets specifications. For elliptical deformations that cannot be corrected, quality control must promptly report the issue to decide whether the pipe should be downgraded or scrapped.
