When a flanged butterfly valve is fully open, the thickness of the disc constitutes the sole resistance to the flow of the medium through the valve body; consequently, the pressure drop across the valve is minimal, resulting in excellent flow‑control characteristics. Butterfly valves are available in two sealing configurations: elastomeric and metal. In elastomeric‑sealed valves, the sealing ring may be either inlaid into the valve body or attached around the perimeter of the disc.
