In general, spiral‑wound pipes are joined by electric‑arc welding. Because welded steel pipes are relatively low‑cost, certain projects—due to constraints such as construction schedules, site conditions, and topography—may also employ alternative connection methods, including threaded joints, flanged connections, hot‑melt joints, and grooved couplings.

There are three main types of spiral‑welded pipe connections:

  1. Flanged connection of spiral pipes

  Flanged connections are generally faster to install, easier to construct, and require simpler specialized tools; however, in terms of safety and sealing performance, they often fail to meet the requirements of most engineering projects. They are particularly well suited for low-pressure pipelines and applications involving frequent relocation or repositioning of piping.

  2. Grooved connection for spiral pipes

  Also known as grooved‑connection technology, it has become the preferred method for connecting liquid and gas pipelines today. Although its development in China lagged behind that of overseas markets, its innovative nature quickly won it widespread acceptance in the Chinese market. The advancement of grooved‑fitting connection technology has simplified and streamlined what were once complex piping‑installation procedures, making them faster, more convenient, and easier to execute—marking a significant step forward in pipeline‑connection techniques.

  Grooved‑type pipe fittings comprise two products:

  ① Pipe components that serve to ensure joint integrity and sealing include rigid couplings, stainless steel clamps, mechanical tees, and trench-type flanges.

  ② Pipe fittings that serve to connect and join pipelines include bends, tees, crosses, eccentric reducers, blind flanges, and spiral-welded steel pipes. Grooved‑type pipe fittings, which provide both connection and sealing, consist primarily of three components: a sealing rubber ring, a coupling sleeve, and locking bolts. The inner silicone sealing ring is positioned on both sides of the pipes to be joined, conforming to the pre‑formed grooves in the pipes; the coupling sleeve is then slipped over the ring, and the assembly is secured with two bolts. Thanks to the integral, sealed design of the silicone sealing ring and coupling sleeve, grooved fittings achieve excellent tightness, and this sealing performance improves as the fluid pressure within the pipe increases.

  Groove‑type connections simplify pipe installation, enhance construction safety, ensure excellent system stability, and facilitate convenient maintenance, thereby delivering significant cost savings and improved economic returns. Although the coupling fittings required for groove‑type connections are relatively more expensive, the overall installation of the piping network yields greater economic benefits compared to flanged connections.

  3. Pipe clamp and pipe material connection for spiral pipes

  As a cutting-edge pipeline connection method, it can be installed either openly or concealed, and is available in both rigid and flexible configurations. Consequently, it finds wide-ranging applications, including fire‑water systems, chilled and heated water systems for air conditioning, potable water supply systems, petrochemical process piping, thermal power plant and military pipeline networks, as well as wastewater treatment pipelines.
