Thick-walled spiral tubes typically exhibit either non-magnetic or weakly magnetic properties; however, even when magnetic, this does not significantly affect their performance during use. Therefore, for many manufacturers, eliminating magnetism in thick-walled spiral tubes remains highly necessary.
Thick-walled Spiral tube Typically, these materials exhibit either non-magnetic or weakly magnetic properties; however, even when magnetic, such characteristics do not significantly affect their performance during use. Therefore, for many manufacturers, eliminating magnetism in thick-walled spiral tubes remains highly necessary.
The magnetism observed in thick-walled spiral tubes arises because martensite or ferrite are magnetic. During manufacturing, compositional segregation or improper heat treatment can lead to the formation of small amounts of martensite or ferrite within austenitic 304 stainless steel, imparting a weak magnetic response to the tube. To completely eliminate this magnetism, a high‑temperature solution treatment can be employed to restore a stable austenitic microstructure, thereby removing the magnetic properties. It is important to note that, when caused by these factors, the magnetism of thick‑walled spiral tubes remains weak, consistent with the behavior of other grades of stainless steel.
During cold working, the microstructure of thick-walled spiral tubes undergoes a transformation to martensite. The greater the degree of cold deformation, the more extensive the martensitic transformation, and the stronger the magnetic properties of the tube. For example, steel strips of the same grade used to produce Φ76 tubes exhibit no significant magnetism, whereas when used to produce Φ9.5 tubes, the higher cold‑bending deformation results in noticeably enhanced magnetism. Similarly, square and rectangular tubes, which experience greater deformation than round tubes—particularly at the corner bends—display even more pronounced magnetism due to the more severe plastic strain.
