The notation methods can be divided as follows: the outer diameter of a spiral welded steel pipe is indicated by the letter D, followed by the specific outer diameter value and wall thickness; for example, a spiral welded steel pipe with an outer diameter of 108 mm and a wall thickness of 5 mm would be denoted as D108 × 5. Plastic pipes also use the outer diameter to indicate size, such as De63.

  2. Other types, such as reinforced concrete pipes, cast-iron pipes, and galvanized steel pipes, are designated by DN. In design drawings, the nominal diameter is typically used. The nominal diameter is an artificially established standard intended to facilitate design, manufacturing, and maintenance. Diameter is the specification designation for spiral-welded steel pipes (or pipe fittings). The nominal diameter of a spiral-welded steel pipe does not correspond to its inner or outer diameter.
